Candleholder Donated by Mrs Johns For use underground, with a spike that could be wedged into gaps between rocks. Candles were the only light source for miners until the early 1800s. They were also used as a measure of time and an indicator of air quality/oxygen levels. #everydaythings #armchairmuseum #museumfromhome #cornwall #lockdown #confinedspaces

Gwennap Pit. This image comes from one of the many personal photo albums that are held in the photography collection @musecornishlife. Gwennap Pit at Busveal near Redruth, is a geographical and historical anomaly - formed by the falling of old mine workings. It marks the spot John Wesley termed “the most magnificent spectacle this side of heaven”. https://photographs.museumofcornishlife.co.uk #everydaythings #armchairmuseum #museumfromhome #cornwall #lockdown #congregation #sundayservice

1950s Canvas Flooring Presented by Mrs E Bray. Vinyl-coated canvas was a popular mid-Century choice for kitchens and bathrooms. It was cheaper and easier to fit than linoleum. However, it was less durable, and not quite as forgiving to walk on. This piece, which covers the floor of the 1950s kitchen @musecornishlife, is studded with tiny, round dents - probably from stiletto heels. #everydaythings #armchairmuseum #museumfromhome #cornwall #lockdown #domesticactivity

Death’s-Head Hawk Moth. Found at Carminowe Farm, Gunwalloe, by Mrs F C Lane. With its skull-like marking, in folklore, it is an omen of death, and also seen as a cue for radical transformation. Known as the 'Bee Robber', it can emit a sound similar to the hum of the queen bee, which is a signal to suspend activity within the hive. #armchairmuseum #lockdown #cloakedintruder
